KIERAN PAUL PHOTOGRAPHY - DUNCOMBE PAK WEDDING
Why did you choose Kieran Paul as your DUNCOMBE PARK WEDDING photographer?
We'd seen some of Kieran's work following a friend's wedding and knew he was the photographer for us. He creates such beautiful images which don't feel too staged or 'classically' wedding which is exactly what we were looking for.
Tell me about your experience on the day having your photos taken?
We're not the most comfortable in front of the camera and by the end of the day Kieran made us feel like models! So relaxed, so comfortable, and so much fun. Kieran's vision on the day was incredible, spotting shots and locations that we hadn't even considered. We really feel like we came away with a new friend and can't wait to meet up for drinks next time we're up north!
HOW DID YOU BOTH MEET?
We met at pre-season fitness for the hockey club we had both just joined
TELL ME ABOUT THE PROPOSAL?
Jon took me away to Rome for my birthday as a surprise but I really wasn't expecting anything because we were in the middle of buying our first flat so already spending quite a bit of money! We arrived in Rome to discover our luggage was missing (luckily the ring was in hand luggage) and so I made us wait at the airport for another two hours to see if it arrived - it didn't and JP was getting more and more anxious. We finally abandoned the case to go check into our hotel where JP was insistent we went for a walk before it started raining. I started to get a bit suspicious as we headed towards the Giardino degli Aranci which has an incredible view of the city.
We went to look at the view and it was quite busy which I think nearly put JP off but he got down on one knee, I cried a lot, a crowd gathered and started cheering and we then went to call our families and tell them the good news. When we finally came round out of our little bubble, we realised there were 3 to 4 wedding couples in their full dresses/suits etc all having their photos taken in the garden which is apparently a Roman tradition so we think that was a good sign!
JP had booked us a beautiful restaurant for the evening but because we had no luggage and only trainers we had to reschedule as they wouldn't let us in - so we celebrated by drinking champagne at the hotel, buying emergency outfits at Zara and going to a tiny little pasta place. Wouldn't have changed it!
what do you guys do for a living. What makes you tick. What do you do in your free time and what’s your ideal day?
Jon is a commercial solicitor and I'm a PR Director, so a nice balance of logistics and creative - very helpful when planning a wedding!
I'd say free time is dominated by sport - both play hockey but are also keen cyclists, hikers, runners, skiers - anything that means we can enjoy cake guilt free! But we also love travelling and seeing new places, we're not great at relaxing though and love an activity.
Ideal day probably get some fitness out the way in the morning then maybe brunch and then plans with friends in the evening - if there's drinks JP is bound to have an Old Fashioned and I'll have a Picante.
Why did you choose duncombe park, what did you love about it when you saw it for the first time?
Growing up in the area I've known about Duncombe Park since I was little and took JP walking there when he first came up to meet my family. We had our hearts set on getting married in my village church but as it is so remote it made it hard to find a nearby venue. Jon actually suggested Duncombe Park and so we got in touch knowing they didn't do many weddings but when we went to look round we were absolutely stunned by how beautiful it was - it's such a magical place.
We were really keen to do a tipi wedding and the flexibility of having dinner indoors and then dancing and drinks at the orangery with a tipi was perfect.
We went to look round the venue with my Mum and Dad in August 2019 and it was actually the last day I spent with my Dad before he passed away unexpectedly in September - he had loved the venue and it made it even more special knowing he'd seen where our wedding would be.
Tell me about your vision for the day, can can give in ti as much detail as you like (theme, colour schemes, atmosphere, the dress, the food, what experience you wanted to give your guests) ?
After a rough couple of years (three funerals, a burglary and a global pandemic...) we wanted the overarching atmosphere of the day to be fun and happy. The key thing for us was to be surrounded by our friends and family on the most important day of our lives and we were so lucky that the rules were able to allow that and that lateral flow testing meant that the day was safe and full of hugs.
We never decided on a single colour but I asked our amazing florist Jo to make it feel like a summer meadow, lots of natural flowers and foliage and a little bit wild - with two important flowers in my bouquet, white roses for Yorkshire and protea for South Africa to represent my Dad's heritage. JP went to Cambridge so we also wanted little hints of Cambridge blue throughout the day with his buttonholes, the waistcoats, and the wedding car.
My dress was very feminine and romantic and just made me so happy, but the best decision I had was to have a second 'disco-ball' dress for the evening (and trainers) which was perfect for the party and I think a bit of a surprise for everyone - even me as it was a last minute decision the day before!
Our day was just full of love and laughter and cliché as it may sound, it was the best day of our lives,
